Education and Outreach

Did You Know?

Between 2001 and 2005, the KW Symphony has provided the following Education and Outreach services:
68 classes of Adopt-a-Player (musicians in the classroom) – 1800 kids
28,000 kids brought in to hear special school concerts
15 other in-school concerts (some full orchestra, some small groups)
15 assorted corporate events
20 trips to charitable organizations (soup kitchens, Food Bank, Arthritis Association etc.)
15 presentations to approximately 500 preschool kids
20 nursing home/retirement home concerts by small groups
10 concerts in city halls, museums, art galleries, libraries with small groups
4 mall concerts with full orchestra
5 small groups to hospitals
7 concerts in community centres

Not to mention: coaching of KWS Youth Orchestra and Community Orchestra, private teaching, university teaching, coaching and master classes.

With the assistance of individuals, foundations, and corporate sponsors, the KWS is able to undertake a broad range of community outreach and educational activities. These programmes bring music to people of all ages and abilities in a variety or community settings. Consider donating to the KWS beyond your subscription to support these new and ongoing initiatives.
  • Youth Orchestra Programme: Over 100 young people participate in four ensembles, as well as coaching and chamber music programmes
  • School Concerts: Each year over 10,000 school children attend KWS education concerts
  • School Adopt-a-Player Programme: Musicians are paired with a grade 5 to 6 classroom as students learn more about music and orchestras.
  • Music and Technology Ventures: Educational website and webcasting concerts provide accessibility to concerts and programmes.
  • Open Dress Rehearsals: KWS donors, high school, music and university students observe the orchestra as it prepares to perform a concert.
  • Symphony Sidenotes: An education and entertainment programme at the Kitchener Public Library, Tuesdays at noon during the week of a Signature concert.
  • Tickets for Persons with Special Needs: Corporate and individual donors purchase large blocks of tickets (50 to 100) for donation to members of community service organizations.
  • Community Concerts: Concerts take place in local parks, corporate and government offices, shopping malls, churches, seniors residences, and other public locations.
